The Ondo State chapter of the International Federation of Women Lawyers has called on the Ondo State Police Command to investigate and arrest those who stripped a young girl naked and sent the video on the internet for alleged theft.

The girl, identified as Oyin was allegedly caught in a house located at Oda Road, Akure, the Ondo State capital last Friday with the intention to steal.

The residents of the house and their neighbours allegedly dragged the girl out of the house, beat her and removed all her clothes and started recording her nakedness as the girl pleaded for mercy. The video had gone viral on the social media.

Speaking with journalists on the development, the state chairman of FIDA, Mrs. Olubunmi Niyi-Arajuwa, expressed her displeasure on the action of the residents, describing it as barbaric.

She said the victim had not been proven guilty of the offence she allegedly committed, saying the residents should have handed her over to the police rather than carrying out jungle justice on her.

She said, “We received the said video and it is appalling, it is inhuman, degrading and unacceptable. We want to assure the people that we are on top of the situation. We will not leave any stone unturned.

“We have met with the key players and we have written to the appropriate authorities to take action, the police are there to arrest and investigate perpetrators of the crime. We all have social responsibilities to report offences to the police.

The FIDA chairman appealed to the people of the state to desist from the act self-help and jungle justice, advising them to be handing over any criminal to the police instead of taking the law into their own hands.

Confirming the incident, Public Relations Officer of the Ondo State Police Command, Mr. Femi Joseph, said the case had been officially reported at the command and full investigation had commenced on it.

“The Commissioner of Police is aware of the matter and she had ordered full-scale investigation while a suspect has been arrested over the matter and he would be charged to court,” Joseph explained.
