Nigerians must remain vigilant —APC

The All Progressives Congress has expressed confidence that Nigerians will rise up in defence of democracy should any group of individuals threaten it.

A highly placed member of the party’s National Working Committee, who spoke in confidence because he was not authorised to speak to the media told Sunday PUNCH, in Abuja, on Saturday, that the party was not disturbed about “rumours,” but charged Nigerians to remain vigilant.

The party leader explained that every Nigerian had a duty to protect democracy.

He said, “Like they say, the price for freedom is eternal vigilance. This is not a party issue; it affects all of us irrespective of party, ethnic or religious inclination.

“Yes, we are in government but you know where the real power resides: the people. The state apparatus and the instrument of coercion all reside in the Executive, if there was anything like a coup, I can assure you that by now there would have been arrests and an on-going court martial.

“We should be very careful not to be drawn into a senseless witch-hunt. Are we saying because one is in politics he should severe ties with friends and relations who are in uniform?

“I am aware that the military occasionally organise events at their Officers Mess and they invite their civilian friends to attend in order to improve civil-military relations, are we now saying such gatherings are illegal? We have to be very careful.

“I believe if the Chief of Army Staff being the true soldier he is, has any credible information that anything untoward is happening, he knows what to do, in fact he would have done it before you and I get to hear.”

Earlier, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, said, “We have hesitated to react so far we wanted to wait for Nigerians to react and Nigerians have reacted.

“If there was any such thing in the offing, I think it is clear to everyone that Nigerians will defend their own democracy.”
