An advocacy group, the Niger Delta Non-Violence Youth Leaders Assembly, has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for delegating the functions of the substantive Minister of Petroleum Resources to Dr. Ibe Kachikwu.

The group, which said the endorsement was a welcome development, made the commendation in a statement by its President, Ambassador Kennedy Tonjo-West, and made available to our correspondent in Yenagoa on Sunday.

Buhari’s ill-health, which has made him travel to London for medical treatment, has placed critical decision making of the oil sector in the hands of Ibe Kachikwu.

Kachikwu who is the minister of State for Petroleum Resources is set to be made substantive minister as President Buhari had reportedly told Kachikwu to “go ahead with some critical decisions, including, but not limited to overseeing the forthcoming oil bloc allocations if necessary.”

NDNVYLA noted that Kachikwu’s appointment as a substantive minister would rekindle hope and confidence of the people of the region towards the Federal Government as well as an indication of a commitment to drive development of the Niger Delta..

The group said, “His (Kachikwu’s) endorsement by Buhari is divine, premised on hard work, performance and can also be counted as one of the palliatives to pacify the people of the region.

“Kachikwu traversed the creeks of Niger Delta to make peace; he paid a huge sacrifice, united the people at the communities and align their perspectives to the vision of the government at the centre.”

NDNVYLA said the confidence reposed in Kachikwu was an indication that Buhari values competence and performance as the minister had restored sanity and orderliness to the oil industry within a short time in office.

It noted that Kachikwu, having served as the Group Managing Director, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and Minister for State Petroleum Resources had brought stable pump price and made the product available across the country.

It also said Kachikwu, having worked directly under Mr. President for nearly two years now, had proved his mettle, tested and trusted enough to be confirmed to carry on the vision of the  President.

The group said, ”We consider Kachikwu as the direct student of Buhari, who knows the mind of Mr. President concerning the industry.

”Kachikwu played a pivotal role in bringing together leaders, elders and stakeholders to resolve the problems of the Niger Delta Avengers and other agitated groups that quell the crises.

“We appeal to any interest group that intends to frustrate the endorsement of Dr. Ibe Kachikwu as the substantive Minister of Petroleum Resources by President Buhari to have a rethink.

“We urge them to apply foresight while considering the effectiveness and speedy accomplishment of the President’s vision when Kachikwu steps in.”
