A Kogi High Court sitting in Lokoja on Thursday sentenced two armed robbers, Bala Mohammed and Zekeri Hassan, to eight years’ imprisonment for armed robbery and illegal possession of firearms.

Justice Sunday Otu of Kogi High Court III, who handed down the sentence, said the prosecution had proven its case beyond doubt.

Otu said the convicts, who should be doing legitimate businesses, decided to go against the law to acquire wealth through criminal means.

He said the court, in reaching its decision, saw the need to send a very strong message to the society.

The judge sentenced them to eight years for criminal conspiracy, another eight years for armed robbery and seven years for illegal possession of firearms.

He said the sentences would run concurrently.

According to the prosecuting counsel, Mohammed Abaji, of the state Ministry of Justice, the convicts, with others now at large, on April 25, 2015, robbed a Department of State officer on duty.

According to Abaji, the convicts robbed the officer, Salihu Zuberu, and carted away his phones, a HP Laptop, mini-Uzi machine gun and the sum of N27,000.

The convicts had raised alibis saying they somewhere else, but other victims who they had earlier robbed testified against them.
