The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria has condemned Brigade 2 of the Nigerian Army attempt to cover up the shooting of one of its workers, Mr. Godwin Udoaka by a soldier of 6 Battalion, Seargent Usman Tella.

A statement signed by the union’s chairman, Mr. Mbebe Albert and the secretary, Mr. Ifreke Paul on Sunday, indicated that Tella, who was attached to a Chinese Construction Company, Wizzchino, shot Udoaka at Asutan Street, Uyo on Wednesday.

According to the statement, the army’s attempt through its Assistant Director, Public Relations, 2 Brigade, Captain Shuaib Umar, to ameliorate the situation by saying that Udoaka was injured and not shot, is unthinkable as the union has overwhelming evidence against the army.

“That on 10th May, 2017, the driver of vehicle No. ABC 222AY belonging to Wizzchino Engineering and Sergeant Tella Usman, probably, in a bid to hurry back to base, drove dangerously and against traffic rules along Udo Udoma Street, coming face to face with Godwin Udoka, who came from the opposite direction thereby causing serious traffic jam.

“That Usman ordered Godwin Udoka to ‘reverse,’ an order Udoka found impossible to obey outright given that there were vehicles behind him. That at the easing of traffic, Udoka made to continue his journey towards his office but unknown to him, the said Usman and the driver were in ferocious pursuit.

“That Usman and his driver caught up with Udoka at Asutan Street/Eka Street interjection where Usman hurriedly got out of his vehicle and shot directly at Udoka (who was still seated in his vehicle) with the apparent intention to kill him. The bullet after doing damage to Udoka and the Judiciary vehicle also did substantial damage to a nearby shop.

“That Usman thereafter jumped into the waiting vehicle and sped off when a crowd approached the scene on hearing the gunshot and seeing Udoka reeling in a pool of his blood.

“That the union vehemently condemns the inexcusable actions of Usman and his accomplice, even more so, the attempt to cover up this most heinous action by the Nigerian Army and calls for immediate investigations into this dastard act so that the culprits are brought to book to serve as a deterrent,” the statement added.
