The Chairman, Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission, Justice Ayotunde Phillips (retd.), has called on the police and other security agencies to support the commission in ensuring a violence-free local government election.

Phillips said adequate security before, during and after the July 22, 2017 election would make the exercise peaceful.

The chairman made the appeal when he and his team visited the state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, at the command’s headquarters in Ikeja, a statement said on Thurday.

She said the commission had partnered the Independent National Electoral Commission on the distribution of Permanent Voter Cards to ensure that all registered voters collected PVCs to exercise their franchise.

“The commission has embarked on sensitisation of the public on the ongoing distribution of PVCs in the 245 registration centres of the state,” she added.

The chairman pledged that the commission would provide a level playing field for all political parties and their candidates, urging them to have confidence in the ability of the commission to conduct a free, fair and credible election.

In his remark, Owoseni assured the commission of the support of the police towards ensuring a hitch-free election.
