For Bob and Rita Marley, extra-marital affair was mutually acceptable

For Bob Marley and his wife, Rita, indulging in extra-marital affairs was not a big deal. Or so it seems.

While their marriage lasted, Rita and Marley not only had three biological children together, they both had 11 other children between them.

According to the information available on the family, while Bob had eight children with eight other women apart from Rita, Rita had three children with three other men: one before she met and married Bob, and two others while still married to Bob.

Two years before Rita and Marley were married, she had had a daughter by another man. Bob adopted the girl, Sharon, born on November 23, 1964, immediately he married Rita.

And although the two of them had three biological children together, Bob regularly fathered children with other women, such that some of the children he had with those women were born a few months apart from those he had with Rita.

In fact, the reggae music legend described his love for children this way: “Children are wonderful. It don’t take plenty y’know. Just a nice girl who don’t take birth control. Sexual intercourse is a lovely thing.”

He got married to Rita Anderson in 1966 when he was 21 years old, and stayed married to her until his death in 1981.

Other children they both had together are:

Marley however had eight other children from eight different women. They are:

  • Imani Carole Marley, born on May 22, 1963 by Cheryl Murray. It is learnt that she is Bob’s first born child, but for reasons unknown, she is not acknowledged as such on the official Bob Marley website.
  • Robert “Robbie” Marley was born on May 16, 1972; his mother’s name is Pat Williams. Robbie was born less than a month after Stephen and was Bob’s first of many children he fathered with other women.  Not much is known about his mother Pat “Lucille” Williams, as Robbie was brought to live with Bob and Rita.  He is not a musician and has mostly stayed out of the spotlight as a motorcycle stunt rider.
  • Rohan Marley, born on May 19, 1972. His mother’s name is Janet Hunt/Dunn. He was born three days after his step-bother Robbie and a month after Stephen. He was trained by Bob and Rita.
  • Karen Marley was born in 1973 and is the daughter of Bob with Janet Bowen.
  • Julian Marley was born on June 4, 1975 from the relationship between Bob and Lucy Pounder. He is a singer, songwriter, producer and self-taught musician with three albums to his credit, most recently 2009’s Grammy-nominated album Awake.
  • Ky-Mani Marley was born on February 26, 1976, and his mother’s name was Anita Belnavis, a Caribbean table-tennis champion. He released his debut album, Like Father Like Son, in 1996.
  • Damian was born in 1978. His mother was the 1976 Miss World, Cindy Breakspeare. Damian was a Grammy Award winner.
  • Makeda Jahnesta Marley was born to Yvette Crichton in 1981 in Miami a few weeks after Bob’s death. She did not grow up with or around any of her half siblings and currently resides in the Philadelphia area.

Perhaps to get back at Bob for his open affairs with other women, Rita also had an affair with a man called Ital, which resulted in the birth of another daughter, Stephanie in 1974. An undeterred Bob Marley still adopted Stephanie as one of his brood.

Rita also had another child, Serita Stewart, on August 11, 1975, from a relationship with one man named Tacky, according to her biography. It was not stated whether or not Bob adopted the child as he did her other two children by other men.

The legendary reggae musician, Bob Marley, would have been 72 years old today if he hadn’t died of cancer 36 years ago at the age of 36.
