Bishop knocks politicians at Awolowo 30th memorial service

The Bishop of  Remo Diocese and Archbishop, Ecclesiastical Province of Lagos, Most  Rev. Olusina  Fape, has described Nigerian politicians  as a crop of selfish and shameless people who are only out to seek personal gain and not to serve the overall good of the country.

Fape said this while delivering a sermon  at the 30th memorial service of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo,  held at Our Saviour’s  Anglican Church, Ikenne Remo, Ogun State on Tuesday.

The bishop, who spoke on the theme, “Remembering Chief Obafemi Awolowo in Joyful Service of God and Humanity,” noted that the current crop of politicians in the country found it convenient to defect from one political party to the other only to satisfy their selfish interest without recourse to the electorate who elected them.

He said, “Today, aspirants into various political offices merely talk about seven or six or five-point agenda, as mere rhetoric without full understanding of what they are talking about. That is why our politicians today are mere chameleons and fair-weather politicians.

“It is very sad for somebody to have been part of an administration or government for 16 years, and because he has lost out to another political party in election to now be describing his former political party as corrupt, reckless or irresponsible.

“It is only in Nigeria this can happen, where people have no sense of shame; and are only out for personal monetary gain and not to serve the overall good of their country.”

The bishop said politicians who engaged in such shameless defection from one political  party to the other would suffer the consequences of their actions, together with their generations.

While speaking on the virtues of  the late sage, the bishop said despite the fact that Awolowo had died 30 years ago, his contributions to the nation and humanity had continued to speak after him .

He said, “For Chief Awolowo, politics is not about what you can acquire or gain, but an opportunity to serve others to live quality life. Papa Awolowo was not thinking of what to grab from Nigeria. He was not even thinking of how to spend the Church’s money. He was not only concerned for the prosperity of Nigeria, he was equally concerned for the prosperity of the Church. No wonder, he was the one who mooted the idea of the Diocesan Investment and Endowment Committee to ensure that the Diocese of Remo is a self-sustaining church.”

Dignitaries at the event include, the Serving Overseer, Latter Rain  Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare; wife of the Oyo State governor, Mrs. Florence Ajimobi;  a former governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel; Afenifere chieftains; Chief Ayo Adebanjo and Senator Femi Okunrounmu; the Chairman, Obafemi Awolowo Foundation, Prof. Oladipo Akinkugbe and Elepe  of Epe, Oba Adewale Osiberu.
