Liverpool missed the chance to reopen a three point lead over Manchester City after playing out a goalless draw with Southampton in a Premier League match on Sunday.

The Reds did have the chance of winning the game when James Milner stepped up to take a penalty.

But the Englishman saw his effort from 12 yards saved by Southampton’s Fraser Forster; the first penalty saved by the goalkeeper this season.

‘The penalty was my fault, so it was probably my fault we did not get the three [points] and I have to take responsibility for that,’ Milner said after the match.

Liverpool now have 70 points from 36 games played, one point ahead of fourth placed Manchester City that also have a game in hand.

The top three teams at the end of the season qualify for the UEFA Champions League group stage while the fourth placed team has to go through one qualifying round to reach the main group stage.
